Changing America's Playlist

WDAV is partnering with public radio stations nationwide to actively confront systemic inequities in classical music, and change America’s playlist with the Recording Inclusivity Initiative (RII). Together, we’re changing the classical playlist, one recording at a time—and one community at a time.

As a key member of Charlotte’s arts community, WDAV will lead by example, advancing representation by diversifying our music library, and sharing our platform with artists representing communities that have been excluded from classical music for generations.

WDAV’S COMMITMENT

In 2023, three community-nominated composers from underrepresented communities will have their works professionally recorded and broadcast by WDAV. These works will gain a larger audience through a national database at which all RII recordings will be shared among peer public radio stations.

To accomplish this goal, WDAV has assembled a diverse panel of musical leaders from the community to nominate and choose the artists we’ll record.

All selected compositions, including contemporary and posthumous works, will be recorded, published if applicable, and distributed by WDAV. RII recordings will be made available to public radio stations for download via the forthcoming RII Database.
