When the world discovered, or maybe RE-discovered the music of Florence Price, a whole new world of appreciation was opened up for Florence and the many other Black women whose voices have contributed to the rich culture and history of American classical music. And thanks to some of those women, the re-discoveries continue. Greetings, I’m Loki Karuna, here to shine some light on one of those women – the incomparable Karen Slack.
A native Philadelphian, Karen Slack is a graduate of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, and the recipient of numerous awards and honors for her work as an operatic soprano. In 2024 she partnered with pianist Michelle Cann to release a now Grammy-winning set of unpublished songs by the late Florence Price, including this one titled, Who Grope with Love for Hands.
Karen’s groundbreaking work continues with opera performances scheduled across the United States, in Canada, and beyond. She’s a woman who’s opening doors of discovery for countless others, and is without a doubt among today’s most noteworthy.
Noteworthy is a production of WDAV classical public radio.
